This weekend, Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art will celebrate its 25th birthday with a three-day program of events, most of which are free to the public, including exclusive performances, tours, and interviews.

Celebrations started this morning, with an Aboriginal smoking ceremony and a performance by Koomurri Aboriginal dancers. The next three days will feature a variety of performances by artists, giving viewers the chance to experience the most temporary of pieces.

The MCA first opened in November 1991, after a bequest was made by Australian expatriate artist John Power. Since then, it has been committed to exhibiting innovative and ground-breaking work, with a strong emphasis on engaging artists and audiences. For anyone who isn’t sure where to start or is looking for a fresh perspective, tours will be held by MCA volunteer guides and experts including artist Kathy Temin and MCA architect Sam Marshall. The celebrations are also catering specifically to art fans who like to take their clothes off, with artist Stuart Ringholt taking guests on naked tours of the MCA collection tonight and tomorrow morning.

This weekend provides a unique chance to find out what goes on behind the scenes at the MCA. Interviews will be held with the Museum’s staff, including the librarian, archivist, and architect, who will reveal the work that has gone into creating and maintaining this Sydney institution throughout its history. The pop-up Twitter Blue Room will hold interviews, Q&A sessions, and performances.

One highlight of the celebrations will be the unveiling and cutting of a giant birthday cake, created by Cakes by Cliff in conjunction with Sydney artists Nicole Barakat and Brook Morgan. This special opportunity to grab as much free cake as possible will take place on the MCA lawn at 12:30 on Saturday.

The MCA is hosting its 25th Birthday Weekend from the 11-13 November. For a full program of the weekend’s events, and to make bookings for ticketed events, visit the MCA’s website.
