Earlier today in a ceremony presided over by fashion’s foremost intellectuals, Emma Stone and Jaden Smith, the Tokyo-based designer Masayuki Ino of streetwear imprint Doublet was named as the recipient of the 2018 LVMH Grand Prize.
Ino was praised in particular for his textile innovation as exemplified in Compression – a t-shirt in a cup that expands when water is added to it – by a jury that included designers J.W. Anderson, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Nicolas Ghesquière, Marc Jacobs, Clare Waight Keller, Karl Lagerfeld and Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. As the Grand Prize winner, Ino receives a €300,000 grant and a yearlong mentoring program with the luxury conglomerate.
Though his work is often categorised as menswear, Doublet, which shows in Paris, trades in largely unisex silhouettes, namely roomy and irreverent sweatshirts that feature ornate embroidery of the kind that imbues classic sportswear silhouettes with an element of subversion.
