As Meghan Markle prepares to wed Prince Harry next month, the spotlight is also on her first marriage, thanks to a new book about the princess-to-be.

An excerpt of Meghan: A Hollywood Princess by royal biographer Andrew Morton, based on interviews with members of her family and some ‘friends’ (a real friend would not spill the tea to the author of an unauthorised biography) was published over the Easter weekend, and reads like an attempt to air her dirty laundry.

Morton alleges Meghan blindsided her husband of two years Trevor Engelson when she told him she wanted a divorce in 2013 – that he had no idea it was coming.

“A wealthy entrepreneur friend claimed the marriage ended so abruptly that Meghan sent her wedding and engagement rings back to Trevor by registered post,” Morton wrote.

“Another confirmed that the decision to end the marriage was made by Meghan and that it had come ‘totally out of the blue … “even at a distance of five years, he can barely contain his anger.”

Morton says the marriage failed because they were spending so much time apart while Meghan filmed Suits in Toronto, and because she wasn’t impressed by Engelson’s career progression.

“While she saw her star rising, her husband’s career was treading water,” Morton claimed.

“With no new projects in sight and with Suits on hiatus, Trevor took Meghan on a cycling vacation to Vietnam. It didn’t help that he became sick with food poisoning. Their escape to exotic locales, which once provided a backdrop for their love, only served to highlight the distance between them.”

The book also quotes a childhood friend of Meghan, who says Markle’s claim to not “know very much about [Harry and the royal family]” as she said in November last year, is not true. The supposed friend says Meghan was obsessed with Princess Diana growing up.

“[Meghan was] always fascinated by the royal family” and “wants to be Princess Diana 2.0,” Morton wrote. “According to family and friends, she was intrigued by Diana not just for her style but for her independent humanitarian mission, seeing her as a role model.”

It’s all very juicy, but it’s hard to imagine anyone who really knows Meghan would speak to Morton for the book. What we’re probably getting is the opinions of people who might want to get revenge on Meghan, or be jealous of her recent good fortune. Pinch of salt, etc.

Harry and Meghan are set to wed on May 19 in St George’s Chapel at Windsor.
