Meghan Markle’s baby shower fell smack-bang between New York Fashion Week and the Oscars, and it was so glamorous it threatened to overshadow both events.
Barricades were assembled outside The Mark hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side to keep back the hundreds of paparazzi, reporters and fans who came to see the Duchess of Sussex in the flesh. On the afternoon of the shower, one after another the A-listers arrived, from Serena Williams to Amal Clooney, who wore a red carpet-ready jumpsuit as the snow fell.
It was quite the spectacle. And according to royal insiders, plenty of eyebrows were raised at the Palace as some wondered why it wasn’t more private. For example, the baby shower could have been held a hotel with underground parking to allow for discreet entry and exit, such as the nearby The Carlyle, preferred by royalty and celebrities for its privacy. Meghan didn’t have to dine out in full view of the public. It would have been easy for her to do the trip, a personal visit, undercover.
“If you are royal and you want to be private, there are a million ways you can be,” Patrick Jephson, Princess Diana’s long-time private secretary, told the New York Post.
“The fact Meghan allowed this to become a media circus is very revealing.”
Revealing of what, exactly?
“This is a clear sign that Meghan thinks that being a royal Duchess is about celebrity — not royalty.”
It’s true, Meghan could have made the trip without the world knowing, if she wanted to. The extreme visibility indicates she wanted the public to know. Why?
Perhaps, when she is being slammed by members of her own family in the press, and apparently not being embraced by Prince William, Kate Middleton and other members of the royal family, she wanted to send a message: my girls have my back.
