Every year, GRAZIA waits with bated breath to see the weird, whacky and absolutely spectacular attire celebs don to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or Met) gala. And we’re sure next year’s outfits will be no different, with Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo and her label Comme des Garçons as the theme.
One of the most coveted events on the fashion calendar, the Met Gala dinner and concert will also see an exhibition – 120 women’s pieces designed by Kawakubo spanning from her inaugural Paris fashion show in 1981 to her current collection.

So what will you be seeing? Avant-garde fashion, no doubt – a signature part of Kawakubo’s creations – and pieces that nod to her love of art, which therefore is so fitting for this event celebrating both creative fields. Labelled a ‘designer’s designer’ garments aren’t for the faint-hearted and she doesn’t seem to mind.
“I have always pursued a new way of thinking about design… by denying established values, conventions and what is generally accepted as the norm,” Kawakubo explained in the Met Gala’s press release, which announced the theme. “The modes of expression that have always been most important to me are fusion, imbalance, unfinished, elimination and absence of intent.”

So celebrated is this designer, she will be just the second living designer since Yves Saint Laurent to be the sole subject of the fashion spectacle.
Pharrell Williams – who collaborated on a fragrance with Comme des Garçons in 2014 – will co-chair next year’s Met Gala event with Katy Perry, Anna Wintour and Kawakubo on May 1, with the exhibition scheduled to open on May 4. We’re counting the days…
