Former First Lady Michelle Obama has revealed context behind the awkward exchange between Melania Trump on Donald Trump’s inauguration day in January 2017. The latter had turned up to the White House with a gift for Mrs Obama, wrapped in a blue Tiffany’s Box but it was the awkward exchange that is today solidified gif gold. Speaking to Ellen DeGeneres, Mrs Obama says she just didn’t know what to do with it.
“There’s all this protocol. I mean, this is like a state visit so they tell you, ‘You’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here’,” she said. “Never before do you get this gift so I’m like, ‘OK, what am I supposed to do with this gift?’
“And everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I’m thinking do we take the picture with it?”
Her husband, former President Barack Obama, stepped in. “My husband saved the day,” she said. “See, he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like what do you do with the box?”
DeGeneres joked about President Trump not walking up the stairs with Mrs Trump. “First of all, he just walks up the steps without his wife, just leaves his wife behind.”
But what was inside the box? Mrs Obama says it was a lovely frame.
