Miley Cyrus is dealing with new legal trouble over her 2013 hit We Can’t Stop.

Jamaican singer/songwriter Michael May (who performs as Flourgon) has filed a lawsuit against Cyrus alleging she stole lyrics from his 1988 song We Run Things.

According to legal documents seen by People, May claims Miley’s lyrics “We run things / Things don’t run we” were taken from his lyrics “We run things / Things no run we”.

May also argues that Miley “substantially incorporated” his “vocal melody/rhythm/cadence/inflection” in We Can’t Stop.

May’s legal representation told Reuters he wants at least US $300 million in damages, and seeks to stop Miley from receiving any more royalties from the track.

We’ll have to wait and see how it plays out, but May’s case could be thrown out of court if Miley’s lyrics are deemed too “banal”, as the judge found in the case of Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off when two songwriters alleged she stole the lyrical concept “the players gonna play play play play play, and the haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate.”
