When Miley Cyrus was 18, she irrevocably threw away her wholesome Hannah Montana image and took on a rebellious and sexually-charged adult persona.

She grew up on the world stage, with people deciding who Miley Cyrus when she was still far too young to know who she was, or wanted to be. And so since her teenage years, she has gone to painstaking lengths to tell the world: this is who I am.

So we shouldn’t be surprised to learn Miley, who married Liam Hemsworth in December, leapt at the chance to pro-actively evolve her identity as she stares down a new life chapter, by deciding to take her husband’s last name.

“She will still be known as Miley Cyrus but she took my name, which is great,” Liam said in an interview this week as he promotes new film Isn’t It Romantic.

“I didn’t ask her to take my name and she was like of course I’m taking your name. I’m like, ‘That’s awesome, that’s really good.'”

As any woman who has wrestled with the decision to take their spouse’s last name after marriage knows, the prospect of changing the name you’ve had your whole life is both terrifying and liberating. For Miley, we now know the latter emotion won.

“It’s become a little bit more normal but the first couple of weeks—It’s only been a month and a half or something—but the first couple of weeks was really fun to be wife and husband,” Liam said. “I just have her in as a wife in my phone now.”
