Since they called off their engagement in 2013 and then got back together last year, Miley Cyrus hasn’t spoken publicly about her relationship with Liam Hemsworth.

As it turns out, she’s just been waiting to communicate in the way she’s most comfortable expressing herself – through music.

Speaking to Billboard magazine this week, the 24-year-old revealed she’s dropping a new single on May 11 called Malibu, and that she wrote it about fiancé Liam.

“[People] are going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?” she said.

Discussing for the first time why the couple called off their engagement in 2013, Cyrus said “I needed to change so much. And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognise you anymore.’

“We had to re-fall for each other.”

In a likely reference to their split, one line of the lyrics reads:

“I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song.”

After a couple of years apart, in January 2016 Miley began wearing the Neil Lane engagement ring Liam had given her in 2012 again, and slowly she and The Hunger Games actor began appearing in public together.

They still rarely walk the red carpet as a couple though, and seem to spend most of their time at home in Malibu with their seven dogs, two pigs and a horse, or hanging out with Chris Hemsworth, Elsa Pataky and their children in Byron Bay.

Miley’s new album, slated for sometime this year, is expected to debut a new sound for the singer; an acoustic guitar and vocals heavy work that moves away from the eccentricity of her recent albums, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz and Bangerz.
