If there was to be one standout and surprising makeup trend of the year, it’s coloured mascara. The kaleidoscopic wands of decades past – namely the ’80s and ’90s – made an unexpected return to the beauty forefront, and now, Miley Cyrus has jumped onboard.
Making her first red carpet debut with lover Liam Hemsworth in four years, it wasn’t their PDA which caught our attention (although that too had us transfixed), it was Miley’s decidedly turquoise lashes. Long, thick and spidery, Miley’s eyelashes were painted a vivid aquamarine, so intense they even proved a distraction from her Maria Esctote Black Hippie Flower Dress (a blatant nod to her Happy Hippie Foundation).
Miley’s big, round baby blues were played up with youthful exuberance, enhancing her natural eye colour and drawing attention to peepers. For those with attention-seeking inclinations, or simply want to play beauty dress ups, a lashing of coloured mascara can intensity your natural colour and make for the ultimate statement look. For those not as bold and brash as Miley (i.e. many of us), the trick is to coat lashes with black first to add depth, then go in with a vibrantly coloured wand. Keep the rest of your coverage fresh and perky, with a lick of lip gloss.
