The breakdown of Miley Cyrus’ and Liam Hemsworth’s marriage was one that hit close to home. This could be partly due to the fact that Hemsworth is one of our own – a Byron Bay local alongside his also famous brother, Chris Hemsworth. It could also have something to do with The Disney Channel, and how many of us grew up watching Cyrus play the loveable tween-cum-secret-pop-star Hannah Montana. Either way, the fast and furious split after nine months of what seemed like wedded bliss has well and truly tugged on our heart strings.
Since the news went public, Cyrus embarked on a rightfully-earned hot girl summer sojourn, more specifically on a super yacht in Italy, making out with Caitlyn Jenner and wearing a lot of Versace. Her final stop on the post-split tour is today’s MTV VMAs, where Cyrus performed her latest single, Slide Away. According to Miley fans and tabloid fodder, Slide Away references Hemsworth and the separation, and accurate or not, the performance was nothing short of emotional, and somewhat marked the closure of this highly-publicised chapter of her life.
Cyrus took to the stage in a slinky black mini dress, strappy sandals and layers of chunky necklaces. Her hair was clearly the focal point though – so slick with shine that it almost looked wet. Sleek hair has been trending thanks to the Kardashian-Jenners and their penchant for all things high-gloss, but Cyrus has taken it to a whole new level wearing it essentially glued down to her forehead. We kind of love it, but also kind of want to spray it with dry shampoo. Either way, Cyrus looked incredible, and most importantly happy at the VMAs, and heart-wrenching separation or not, that’s all we could hope for.
