When Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana decide on a theme for a new collection, the biggest giveaway comes in the form of a sculpted shoe. Consider the pineapple-heeled pumps hinting at Spring/Summer 2017’s fruit theme, the bleeding heart Mary Janes of Autumn/Winter 2017 or the tile-print shoe of Cruise 2017, inspired by the Majolica ceramic pottery of the Italian Renaissance. Which leaves us wondering if the Amore tomato-can stars of Dolce & Gabbana’s SS18 range serve as a wink to Andy Warhol or a tribute to the designers’ favourite Italian meal. We suspect it’s probably a little of both.
