Like a virulent strain of drug-resistant influenza, Australia’s love affair with the espresso martini shows no signs of ever abating, with the popular cocktail evolving at a rate to baffle both critics and connoisseurs alike.

If proof positive of the matter was ever needed, you needn’t look further than the Mr Black Festival of the Espresso Martini: the world’s first festival devoted entirely to celebrating the caffeinated concoction. Due to overwhelming popular demand, the festival recently added a third day to its inaugural Sydney agenda after selling out the first two days (and an opening party at PS40) almost instantly.

For ardent lovers of the espresso martini – which I recently discovered has been abbreviated by millennials to ‘EMs’ – a protracted weekend spent not only imbibing espresso martinis but participating in espresso martini and cold-brew masterclasses could not come at a better time, considering the event takes place at Circular Quay and aligns with the start of Vivid Sydney. Cocktails at the festival will be created using Mr Black Coffee Liquor in collaboration with Ketel One Vodka and MONIN; coffee comes courtesy of Allpress and food will be provided by Mary’s Burgers, Mr Bao, Loving Earth Chocolate and Donut Papi. There will also be live music, Young Henry’s craft beer, contributions from specialty coffee roasters, bars and coffee shops and coffee pong, naturally.

The first two days of the festival have sold out, however, limited tickets are still available for Sunday May 28. You can find out more information here. Melbourne and London events are slated for later this year.
