Nicole Kidman’s renaissance as one of Hollywood’s most formidable talents continues after the Australian actress received an Emmy nomination today.
Kidman earned the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie nod for her role in hit HBO series Big Little Lies, which collected 16 nominations – Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Alexander Skarsgard all earned supporting actor category nods.
The 50-year-old, who played Celeste Wright in the small-screen adaption of the novel of the same name by Australia author Liane Moriarty, is up against her co-star Reese Witherspoon in the category.
But there’s little chance of the two mega-stars getting competitive with one another. Kidman spoke to Entertainment Weekly soon after the nomination was announced, revealing she and Witherspoon had just been on vacation together and spoke right after the news broke.
“We texted,” she laughed. “We’re so modern.”
She also said that the positive response highlighted by the Emmy nominations may help in getting the green light for a second season of Big Little Lies.
“It inches us closer,” she told EW.
“But so much of it is trying to stay true to the characters and their voices. If we can do it, then it will be done. I believe their stories warrant it and I don’t want to abandon them. We don’t want to sell them short, either.
“But I’m hoping we can find it if we take the leap.”
The biggest winners in the Emmy nominations were Saturday Night Live and Westworld, who tied with 22 nominations each.
The 2017 Emmys ceremony is on September 17 in Los Angeles.
