Carly Cushnie’s first show sans et Ochs (her partner Michelle Ochs departed the brand in February) was a celebration. A celebration of family, of diversity, of culture; it was a show full of soul, with her Caribbean roots playing out in riotous colour across beautiful women of all shapes, sizes and races.

When it came to beauty, Cushie looked to another woman of colour to inspire her. Sade – the British-Nigerian singer / songwriter with a treacle-like tone – played hair muse, as slicked-back braids were the ultimate smooth operator.

Led by TRESemmé NYFW Stylist Ursula Stephen, hair revisited the plait with nostalgic glory. Pulled back entirely off the face and parted directly down the middle, Stephen slicked and sprayed hair simultaneously, brushing and spritzing TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray between strokes. “Spray hair with the TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray at the same time as you are brushing hair straight back into the ponytail. This will make hair very smooth and shiny while protecting it from any breakage or damage from the braiding,” she explained backstage.

Lofty ponytails sat just above the nape of the neck, then were plaited deftly by the TRESemmé team into one chunky braid and secured by a coil of hair. Accompanied by a slick of sticky red lipstick and huge hoops, the look was a glorious homage to Sade’s iconic beauty look – a sleek braid, red lip and gold hoops.

Braids which sang of soul; it was a retro redux of a trend that continues to dominate the runway. Here’s how to become the ultimate smooth operator with TRESemmé.

How to Braid like SADE
STEP #1 Prep hair with TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo & Conditioner to smooth hair
STEP #2 Spritz the TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray all over wet hair, then blow dry
STEP #3 Brush the hair straight back (no part) into a low ponytail and mist another layer of the TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray as you brush back
STEP #4 Make sure the low ponytail is sleek and tight before securing with a black rubber band
STEP #5 Once secured at the base of the pony, braid the ponytail down and secure with black rubber band at the end
STEP #6 Finish the look with the TRESemmé Extra Hold 4 Hairspray to hold hair in place
