A sweltering night on Park Avenue Armoury in New York City was sure a world away from The Port International Cruise Terminal in Shanghai tonight. The former was the scene for Tom Ford’s Spring 19 show on September 5, a delicate collection of satin, feathered and tasselled evening wear in a black, blush pink, and violet-mauve palette and punctuated at the toes with a point (“Given the harshness of the world, a softer palette seemed right to me this season,” said Ford).
Of the collection, Ford said he wanted his garments to be flattering for the woman who wore them, making her appear “taller” and “slimmer”. “I feel that fashion has somehow lost it’s way a bit and it is easy for all of us to be swept up in trends that have lost touch with what women and men want to actually wear,” Ford said in a statement tonight. “So I did not want to make clothes that were ironic, or clever but simply clothes that were beautiful.”
11,851 kilometres away, Tommy Hilfiger launched his Fall 18 collection; an array of sportswear in burgundy, gold and navy blue in front of a spectacular skyline in Shanghai on September 4. Joan Smalls walked in both. How?
Directly after Hilfiger’s show, Smalls skipped the TommyNow afterparty at Club 3 On The Bund and was on a 15 hour flight at midnight out of China to make it in time to New York City to walk in Ford’s show.
Also in attendance at Ford’s show was Crazy Rich Asians and A Simple Favour star Henry Golding who was seated in the coveted position next to Anna Wintour who in turn was seated next to Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson. “[Tom Ford] is the pinnacle of men’s designers, the godfather of tuxedos, evening wear and casual wear,” Golding told THR of Ford, who dressed him for the Crazy Rich Asians premiere in Los Angeles. “It was a statement, for being a big Asian movie, to have an Asian leading man being dressed by the biggest menswear designer in the world who only dresses A-list stars. I was so happy and so lucky.”
The other noticeable celebrity to turn heads was Cardi B who stunned in a figure hugging black Tom Ford. Take a peek at the arrivals here.
