Slathering on a facial oil is the epitome of skin luxury. Eliciting sensory delight and appeasing our noses with pleasure isn’t the only benefit however, they are also incredibly nourishing and healing for the skin.

As one who tips on the oily side of the scale, I was always super wary of oil-based products, let alone oils themselves. Oil on oil? Horror-stricken. But since being conned by a beaming beauty buff a few years back, I am now completely and utterly hooked. Often, I don’t even moisturise, and find smothering my skin in a facial oil leaves it both nourished and radiant the following morning.

But for those suspicious folk, who still can’t quite grasp the concept of ‘oil’ – the key is to take it slow and pick your oil according to skin type. Remember, not every oil was created equal, and as with most skincare, it’s a matter of trial and error. For the greasier gals, opt for lighter oils like jojoba or apricot, acne-prone should pick hazelnut and sesame, and those with dry skin look for heavier oils like coconut or almond.

To avoid any oil spills, start off with one or two drops, and the rest will be glowing skin history. These nine have our slick of approval. Walk, don’t run (you might slip).

DERMALOGICA Phyto Replenish Oil

In search of a light, weightless oil (yes, there is such a thing)? Look no further than Dermalogica’s Pyhto Replenish, currently atop my own beauty vanity and in high rotation. Despite being feather-light in viscosity, it is enriched with restorative camellia and tamanu oils, an essential blend of orchid flower and chia seed oil to soften the appearance of fine lines and seal in hydration, and antioxidant-rich sunflower, rice bran and rosemary extracts to counteract the effects of damaging free radicals. Fiercely protective of our skin’s barrier function, you won’t get an oil more loyal than this.

Chanel HUILE DE JASMIN
Etched in Chanel history, Gabrielle Chanel composed this oil in 1927, and to this day, it remains steadfast in Chanel’s skincare range, testament to its efficacy and beauty. Pure and simple, its jasmine component is from Chanel’s exclusive fields in Grasse, whilst the remainder is composed from naturally-derived ingredients, other oils equally as noble in stature. Upon application, it’s a sensorial dream. Light, floral and truly opulent, skin is left supremely soft and supple.chaneloil

TATCHA Camellia Beauty Oil
From Tokyo to Sydney, the recent arrival of cult Japanese brand Tatcha to Australia has meant we are now en route to Japanese skin (fingers crossed). Their Oil is heralded worldwide as a beauty hero; a nourishing, rich blend of camellia japonica seed oil, squalene, rice and macadamia nut oils and redness-relieving liquorice root. But the opulence doesn’t end there. The oil is flecked with 23-karat gold – decadent indeed – and spiked with bamboo and green tea to transport you to Uneo Park under the falling cherry blossom.
