It was one of the most iconic scenes in film history. Olivia Newton-John’s demure Sandy arriving at the school fair in pants so tight she had to be sewn into them and a black leather jacket slung over exposed shoulders, puffing on a cigarette while her lover Danny Zuko (John Travolta) dropped to the floor in awe (as to the rest of the world). The You’re The One That I Want duet remains not only one of the most enduring scenes in cinema, but also one of the most iconic costumes to ever grace our screens, and now the tiny black outfit has sold at auction for an astounding $US405,700 (AUD $587,000).

According to Julien’s Auctions, the legendary tight black pants, off-the-shoulder top and leather jacket from the movie have sold for more than double the expected price. Along with the costume, 500 items of movie memorabilia, outfits from concerts, awards, cars and jewellery were auctioned, with proceeds going towards the perfomer’s charity and cancer treatment centre in Australia. A reported $US2.4 million was raised, with the iconic pants even being sold with broken zipper.

An outfit which has been mimicked for eternity and will forever be etched in our movie consciousness, it turns out it really is the one that they want – even if it cost “them” over half a million dollars.
