The Duchess of Sussex’s mother Doria Ragland was the stand-out star of the Royal Wedding in the same way Pippa Middleton was to sister Kate in 2011. As she stood graciously in the pews of Windsor Castle – ever so slightly nodding and smiling, sometimes with the occasional tear – the world wanted to know who Ragland was. Thankfully, Oprah Winfrey was already all over this for us, inviting the then-future-mother-of-a-duchess to her palatial mansion in Los Angeles.

Winfrey has since revealed the pair spent an afternoon together doing yoga and eating cumquats from her garden. The television host hit back at rumours she had showered Ragland with gifts in exchange for an interview.

“The story was that Meghan’s mom had come to my house and she left laden with gifts,” Winfrey told Entertainment Tonight. “You know what the gifts were? First of all, she’s great at yoga, so I said, ‘Bring your yoga mat and your sneaks in case we just want to do yoga on the lawn.’

“So one of the bags was a yoga mat and the other was lunch…“She said, ‘I love cumquats,’ and I said, ‘I have a cumquat tree!’”

“For all of the people who said I am getting her gifts and I’m trying to bribe her for an interview — they were cumquats,” she continued. “If cumquats can get you an interview, I’m all for it!”
