In a move perhaps as suspicious as the influx of bids placed on Meghan Markle choosing an Alexander McQueen wedding dress, Cillian Murphy has been named as a serious contender to inherit Daniel Craig’s James Bond.

While Tom Hardy still sits as the favourite – and Craig is rumoured to have signed on for two more Bond movies anyway – the 42-year-old Peaky Blinders star is now firmly in the running. According to OddsChecker, three months ago, he stood at 125/1. Now, those odds have dropped to 12/1.

“The next James Bond market is immensely popular with punters, and is only matched by the next Arsenal manager market for longevity,” said the betting company.

“The Irishman is the darling of the Great British public at the moment, and that’s replicated in who people want as their next heartthrob to play the prestigious role. With the amount of attention we’re seeing on Murphy, bookies have had to respond, and his chances of becoming the famous secret agent are increasing more and more by the minute.”

The internet is a little divided with some fearing the actor who will replace Craig risks losing their career if the audience don’t take to the change. After all, Bond is a merciless killer who cinemas root for, it’s a difficult tightrope to walk.
