At a glance, it appeared as if Christian Dior Makeup Creative and Image Director Peter Philips used tiny diamontes to embellish model’s eyes at the Dior Men’s Fall/Winter2020 show, but they were actually small silver couture snaps.

Inspired by the late stylist and fashion icon Judy Blame, Philips described the concept as “taking ordinary objects and turning them in to something fabulous”. Blame is best known for his punk aesthetic and helping to carve out visual identities in titles such as i-D and The Face. His calling card was taking the mundane – often scrap metal – and using it to fashion statement pieces and avant-garde costumes. Philips has undertaken a similar creative pursuit, using a small item typically used to fasten fabrics, instead placing it on the face as a beauty focal point. In a word, it was beautiful.

Aside from the eyes, Philips used Dior Backstage Face and Body Foundation to even out the model’s skin tone, as well as deft placement of Forever Skin Correct Concealer where necessary. Like the Dior Men’s Cruise show in Miami late last year, it was an amazing display of beauty in male-led fashion. Furthermore, of the creative forces breaking through in terms of hair and makeup at fashion weeks around the world.
