Last year, the stand-out polo fashion look amongst female guests at the Land Rover Polo in the City, Sydney, was elegant head-to-toe white, closely followed by a double off-the-shoulder silhouette.

Today, at the same sporting soiree one year later, the hottest women’s fashion of the day involved a little more navel-gazing.

Because amidst the usual flowing maxi-dresses, micro-skirts and oversized sunglasses worn by celebrities, society figures and fashion bloggers at the national series event, was a sexy-sweet ‘80s-throwback look set to be bigger than ever this summer: a flash of bare midriff. Here are the three VIP guests we think worked the trend best.

LOOK 1: AVRIL ALEXANDER

Model Avril Alexander gave us a lesson in cool-girl polo dressing by wearing a two-piece gingham outfit by Australian label Lioness. (Heads up: gingham, along with black and white polka dots, is the print of the season.) Her strapless bandeau look was capped off fittingly with black riding boots, an unusual but effective choice in taking the overtly sexy edge off her skin-bared look. Hers was by far GRAZIA’s favourite look of the day.

LOOK 2: CHARLOTTE CASLICK

Olympic gold medal-winning Rubgy Sevens star Charlotte Caslick had her own Pretty Woman thing going on: both in her polka dot outfit of choice and the fact that, like Julia Roberts’ movie character, she was given the honour of throwing in the ball to start the match. The 22-year-old Order of Australia recipient, who is a Land Rover ambassador, teamed her stomach-flashing jumpsuit with oversized hoop earrings and tan mules. A gold-winning effort in the sartorial stakes.

LOOK 3: JENNIFER HAWKINS

As the long-time face of MYER, Jennifer Hawkins would never be short of eyes on her fashion choices for any event, but given she’s also a face of Land Rover, today’s outfit stakes were even higher than usual. In short, she delivered, with a little help from celebrity stylist Marina Didovich. There was a whole long of pink, a whole lot of pant, and a whole lot of parasol hat, but where were fashion spectators’ eyes drawn? The flash of J-Bronzed abs of course.
