For Rami Malek, the Oscars was a series of extreme highs and lows – literally.

Moments after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Queen’s Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Malek tripped off the stage and fell hard onto the floor of the auditorium, dropping his gold statuette.

Pictures show Malek being helped up off the floor, led to a seat in the front row and quickly attended to by paramedics and a policeman.

It appears he didn’t incur any serious injuries, as the 37-year-old he was spotted at an after party later on. But as a result of the dramatic misstep, he missed out on posing for an official photo with Best Actress Olivia Colman, Best Supporting Actor Mahershala Ali and Best Supporting Actress Regina King.

Malek is yet to comment on the incident, so we can only speculate as to what caused him to fall.

Perhaps he was so in shock at winning his first Oscar his legs momentarily stopped working. Or, maybe he was in a hurry to get back and celebrate his stunning win with his love, Bohemian Rhapsody co-star Lucy Boynton, who he kissed passionately when his name was read out.

Love hurts.
