Australian fashion designer Richard Nicoll, whose work was acclaimed and adored around the world, has passed away at the age of 39.

The Sydney-based designer, who ran his eponymous label for a decade until he closed it last year to pursue other projects, is believed to have suffered a heart attack in his Darlinghurst apartment on Friday and died at St Vincent’s Hospital.

Police said his death is not being treated as suspicious.

There’s been an outpouring of condolences across Australia and the globe as the fashion community mourns the loss of the highly respected, UK-born talent, who had worked on countless high-profile brands including Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Topshop and Marc Jacobs, and was due to take over as the creative director at Adidas next year.

“Richard was one of the quiet stars of fashion,” his family said in a statement.

“He was a true gentleman, a wonderful friend and a much loved son. Anyone that had the privilege of knowing him knew that he had a heart of gold, an innate kindness and a modesty and humility that sometimes didn’t allow him to acknowledge his own exceptional creative talent.

Born in the UK before moving to Perth with his family at age three, Nicoll attended the prestigious Central Saint Martins fashion college in London. He won several awards throughout his career, including the Elle Style Award for best young designer in 2009. He was twice a finalist for the British Fashion Council Vogue Fashion Fund prize. His designs have been worn by A-listers including Keira Knightley and Anne Hathaway.

Lily Allen, Kylie Minogue, Emma Bunton, Lara Bingle and Christine Centenera are among those who have paid tribute to him on social media.
