Ah, the thong heel. That toe-hugging, high-heeled, flossy flip-flop of eras past (namely the ’90s) continues its modern fashion domination, with Rihanna its latest patron.

Stepping out in New York City in a latex-like, white strapless dress from Australian designer Alex Perry, RiRi added to the all-white look with none other than a pair of thong heels, replete with extra strap across the foot. A small top-handle case in white, pearly sunglasses and copious amounts of bad gal-approved bling accompanied the look, but all eyes were on that seemingly indestructible “ugly” footwear trend.

The elevated flip flop proved the unexpected comeback hit of the summer, with everyone from Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Katie Holmes and of course, Kendall Jenner (who braved Mykonos’s dangerous terrain for a night out in its spindly glory) pedalling its aesthetically-displeasing, neo-nostaglic shape. Rihanna’s version also embraces the square-toe – arguably the other shoe trend of 2019 – and a little ankle accoutrement, with a diamanté anklet affixed to her left ankle.

The anklet – another familiar fashion trope of the ’90s and ’00s – was a huge fixture on the streets of Fashion Week, and RiRi is further proof the anklet and the thong heel are here to stay. All hail glorious neo-nostalgia.
