If newly-bearded Karl Lagerfeld and his VIP event guest list is anything to go by, then laid-back formal dressing is 2018’s new black.

Typically, guests at an exclusive Chanel Haute Couture runway show – like the Spring 2018 collection showcase that happened yesterday in Paris – would roll up dressed in elegant, high-fashion attire (all Chanel, of course), with lofty attitude to boot.

Instead, savvy mavens like Marion Cotillard, Sasha Luss, and Alice Dellal channelled their inner weekend casual.

Forget dressing to the nines in stilettos, sharp tailoring or look-at-me colour. Rather, the coolest girls in the Front Row chose combat boots, denim jeans, cable knit jumpers, biker jackets and (gasp) trainers.

Elfin-like supermodel Sasha Luss (pictured above) was the combat-clad girl we all want to look like on lazy weekends. Director Sofia Coppola slung a relaxed cardigan over a plain navy tee and palazzos.

Equally impressive was Japanese movie star Ayami Nakajo owning the elasticated waistband on her baggy denim trousers with such conviction she opted for a crop top to show it off. (#queen)

But none was as impressive as songstress-turned-movie-star Rita Ora. It’s no secret that fashion’s currently having a torrid affair with ’80s throwback accessories, but when one celebrity so seamlessly blends three kitsch looks from that decade, it’s seriously impressive.

Granted, her look was head-to-toe Chanel (hey, they were throwing the party after all), but few mortals would (or could) have carried off daggy-dad trainers with ankle socks, a hot pink bum bag, and a built-in hoodie at a swanky soiree without looking like they were in costume.

As for Lagerfeld (who was sporting a beard for the first time in four decades) and his runway show, there was plenty of fashion fresh air on offer there too. Bright sorbet colours and frivolous details were fun and a far-cry from the somber mood of his recent Metiers d’Art Paris-Hamburg 2017/18 collection show.

Read into that what you will, but we have an inkling of Lagerfeld’s not-so-hidden message: tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1989.
