“I put a bird on my head,” baulked Carrie Bradshaw as she told Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha the lengths she went to for Big who stood her up at the altar on her wedding day in the Sex And The City film. In 2008, making your ‘something blue’ a blue birds of paradise fascinator was deemed so outlandish that not even a Vivienne Westwood gown could detract.

Well, come 2018, Sarah Jessica Parker – the Sex and City actress who starred as Carrie – proved this notion true once again, this time in gilded Dolce Alta Moda confection covered in precious stones at the Met Gala. The actress arrived in a Queenly fashion but it wasn’t her gown people were talking about. It was the nativity scene perched on her head.

“The accessories world is like an endless possibility, but it has to feel like it’s suitable,” Parker told Vogue. “I don’t try to make decisions based on what might get attention or be controversial or use it just to use it. I think of it as connection from head to toe—and sometimes a headpiece really feels right.”

The actress had quite a literal take on the theme. Titled “Heavenly Bodies,” the gala explored Catholicism’s influence on fashion. While Dolce and Gabbana have a history of weaving religious references into their collections, the talking point surrounding Parker was how the heavy-looking feature was secured atop of her head. Other questions included:

  • How did Parker get in and out of the car?
  • What is it made of?
  • Why did Parker choose to wear the actual nativity scene on her head?
  • Did her kids get nightmares?
  • Did people mainly stare at the nativity scene or Parker’s blue eye-shadow?
  • What did Bradley Cooper really think?

Perhaps though the best meme to hit the internet harped back to Carrie Bradshaw herself. No one even remembers the bird now.
