In an era where new skin creams and cutting edge anti-ageing technology seem to drop as often as a Kendrick cameo on iTunes charts, it’s easy to get a little jaded. However the latest wrinkle cure innovation coming out of the US is shaking off that skincare fatigue.

The ‘second skin’ innovation works like Glad Wrap for a sagging face and Nancy Ganz for under eye bags.

Developed by scientists Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the cream is made up of silicone-based polymers and oxygen that simulate the look and feel of younger skin. Trials found that when it was placed under the eye it instantly made the area look tighter and younger.

“We started thinking about how we might be able to control the properties of skin by coating it with polymers that would impart beneficial effects,” said Daniel Anderson, associate professor in MIT’s department of chemical engineering Anderson. “We also wanted it to be invisible and comfortable.”

Perhaps even more exciting is the notion that film could be soaked in SPF prior to application, meaning the user can be protected without the standard sunscreen fear of it sweating or washing off.

It’s not without its downsides though. It’s not yet FDA-approved in the US so the possibility of it becoming available in Australia anytime soon is unlikely, plus the film only works on the skin for one day. However judging the recent reaction to news of the product and compelling before-and-afters, it’s definitely one technology to watch.
