Going against her mother’s wishes, Selena Gomez did take up a role in Woody Allen’s romantic comedy A Rainy Day In New York. Her decision to work with a director who has been accused of sexual abuse – and in the middle of Hollywood’s current social climate – startled a lot of people.

Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, responded to an Instagram comment yesterday whereby a fan asked why she wouldn’t make her daughter write an apology for starring in such a film. “Sorry, No one can make Selena do anything she doesn’t want to,” Teefey responded. “I had a long talk with her about not working with him and it didn’t click,” she wrote on Monday, January 15. “Her team are amazing people. There is no fall person here. No one controls her. She makes all her own decisions. No matter how hard you try to advise. It falls on deaf ears.”

On January 15, Gomez’s co-star Timothée Chalamet announced he planned to donate his entire salary to three charities including Time’s Up. Today, Gomez is reported to have also followed suit with a source telling US Weekly the singer donated “more than she made on the Woody Allen movie”.

“Her donation was private,” the source said. “She did give a large donation weeks ago. She fully supports the movement.”
