Selena Gomez’s heartbreak anthem “Lose You To Love Me” was already riddled with both pain and elation. While the track chronicled the lovelorn times between the 27-year-old songstress and her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, there was a silver lining: It shot to the top of the Billboard chart attracting 38.8 million streams in the US alone in its debut week of release – a first for Gomez.
But the singer’s performance of her single at the American Music Awards on Sunday night was as shaky as her past relationship. Ironically, one of the lyrics accuses Bieber of singing off key in her chorus – something online trolls have likened to Gomez’ own performance. Take a listen:

A source close to the singer, however, has shone light on what happened moments before Gomez opened the awards show. “She definitely had a panic attack,” the source told People.com. “She was nervous. She hasn’t been on stage in two years, and it’s an important song in her career. She really wanted to deliver.”
“It threw her off. She did sound better at rehearsal,” the source continued.
However, Billboard are reporting a different story. A man claiming to be part of the sound engineering crew at the AMAs said Gomez’ ear piece was “cutting in and out” meaning she couldn’t hear herself during parts of the song. “She took it like a champ at the end when we apologised for what happened and she said something along the lines of ‘sh*t happens’. She was the sweetest, in rehearsals and everything,” the source said. “One of the most down to earth celebrities I’ve ever seen in action.”
The source also remarked that the rendition sounded much, much better in the Microsoft Center than it did for audiences watching at home. “TV stereo is not mixed properly when it’s live,” the source continued. “The reverb and echo from the theatre properly impacted the overall sound of it which can’t be sent through the same audio channels unless [Gomez] decided to use playback.”

The performance marked Gomez’s first live television performance in two years. After a quick costume change, she sang her second single “Look At Her Now” – a much stronger and more confident Selena.
