Selena Gomez has pulled back from public life in recent times in light of her well-documented health problems, but she’s now released new music – sort of.

Gomez sings on new song Anxiety by fellow singer and close friend Julia Michaels – and her lyrics are pretty revealing:

“Ι’ve always wanted to be one of those people in the room that says sοmething and everyοne puts their hand up. Like, if you’re sad put your hand up/Ιf yοu hate someone, put your hand up/Αnd if you’re scared, put your hand up.

Feel like Ι’m always apologizing fοr feeling/Like Ι’m οut of my mind/When Ι’m doing just fine,” Gomez goes on to sing. “And my exes all say that Ι’m hard tο deal with/ Αnd I admit it, it’s true.”

Gomez has been open about her struggle with mental health, a battle that has seen her spend extended periods in rehab. It’s a dark part of the 26-year-old’s life which has undoubtedly affected her relationships with exes Justin Bieber and The Weeknd, possibly leading to that last line.

Speaking about the song on Zane Lowe on Beats 1 on Apple Music overnight, Michaels revealed how Gomez got involved with the project.

“We wrote ‘Anxiety’ and I sent it to Selena. And I was like, ‘I think it’d be really awesome to have a song with two women on it that struggle with the same thing, that are talking about something other than two women fighting for a guy’s attention.’

“It’s almost like a female empowerment song without it being a female empowerment song. It’s us saying, ‘Hey we have anxiety and we’re OK with it.'”
