Selena’s latest red carpet look has us dreaming of summer party dressing

As the end-of-year social season fast approaches, perhaps it’s savvy to take a leaf out of Selena’s soiree-dressing book. (Or let’s be frank, the book of the celebrity stylist she shares with the likes of Margot Robbie, Dakota Johnson and Natalie Portman, the wildly talented Kate Young).

The Bad Liar singer stepped out at an awards night in Los Angeles yesterday wearing a barely-there LBD by cult Parisian brand Jacquemus that showed plenty of thigh, shoulder and hello-world attitude.

The minimalist look was finished with matching chunky gold hoop earrings and ring by Cartier, a simple black purse from Louis Vuitton and one pair of brow-raising heels that prompted a wave of both hearts-in-eyes and head-scratching from followers on social media.

“I was like woah, is she stepping on an orange,” said one Gomez fan on Instagram feed. “So different and unique I don’t know whether to have you send me a pair or to hate them, but I think I love them,” said another to Young of the shoes that Emily Ratajkowski also teamed with a mini dress for a party in Paris during fashion week last month.

Both black dress and shoes by talented – and famously handsome – designer Simon Jacquemus first appeared on his brand’s Spring/Summer 2018 runway during Paris Fashion Week. The shoes’ heels feature a citric-coloured ball on one heel and trapezoid block on the other that are part kids building block, part Bunnings vibe. The 90s-tone detailing was reminiscent of a Loewe-era Stuart Vevers, who once added oversized nuts, bolts and lightbulb shapes to his bags and shoes for the Spanish brand.

To Gomez and Young’s credit, such is the genius of a perfectly malleable little black dress. Even one as sexy as this ruched, asymmetric-hemmed mini works just as well with quirky statement shoes as ankle boots, stilettos and even thigh-high heels.

Mid-length satin slip dresses had their day with the help of big-time fan Kim Kardashian throughout most of 2016, but for summer 2017, the only way to wear your spaghetti-strapped dress is short, slightly fitted and black, black, black.
