Move over boys: we’re running the car club now. There’s nothing that says ‘fast living with attitude’ like an allusion of big-stakes motor racing.
The stand-out look from Miuccia Prada’s spectacular Miu Miu Cruise 2018 show was a bold yellow micro-jumpsuit with retro speed stripes, teamed with the same driving boot-inspired lace ups and trucker caps that framed the whole collection. Pit crew overalls with race team patches were made pretty with pointed shoes and polished red lips.
At Balenciaga’s AW17 show, Demna Gvasalia made pencil skirts of luxury car mats – in matte black, racing green and reflective silver – wrapped tightly around his models’ waists. Just to drive home the high-octane reference, he threw in evening bags that looked like wing mirrors and totes made of nylon spare tyre covers.
Of course, any obtusely masculine overtones at Balenciaga were balanced with plenty of floral, neon tights, mis-buttoned coats and this season’s hottest print decal, polka dots, all blended because, well, he’s Demna.
Here’s a hot styling tip for starters: retro references work best. Begin with a cap and work downwards, then add a bag belt (the accessory formally known as the bum bag) as a practical touch.
