They’re unlikely co-stars and perhaps even more surprisingly, apparently becoming close friends. Since late last month, Sienna Miller and Russell Crowe have been spotted filming The Loudest Voice In The Room around New York City. The actors are playing former Fox News head honcho Roger Ailes and his wife Elizabeth in story about Ailes very public fall from grace following sexual harassment claims. The actors are barely recognisable, however, in full prosthetics used to portray the couple much older than their own years.
Costuming aside, Miller was recently seen wandering the set in a Rabbitohs’ beanie. A cozy piece of merchandise promoting the rugby league team that Crowe co-owns. Questions abound…was it a gift from Crowe? Was it freezing and Miller grabbed the nearest beanie? Is Miller now a staunch league supporter? It’s a departure for a woman usually noted as one of the most fashionable in the world.
Of late, the star of Alfie, Factory Girl, American Sniper and the soon-to-be-released 21 Bridges has been back to her best-on-ground status, re-immersing herself in her career and all the red carpeting that goes with it. Given her super-papped years of circa 2004 that were equally horrifying for their brazen invasion of privacy from the UK press and the subsequent phone hacking scandal of 2011, she could have been forgiven for throwing in the towel and living a life more reclusive. However, we, her humble fashion supporters, are thrilled the former fiancé of Jude Law and mother of one is back at it. It gives us both current-day inspiration and some much-welcome nostalgia.
The iconic trends of Miller’s formative years were inexorable. Was there an early 00’s fashion-lover alive who didn’t try the ra-ra-skirt-slouch-boot combo? Or a high street store than didn’t recreate her bohemian-western theming? It was a ripe time for folky casual cuteness and Miller was the instigator. If her Aussie-sport accessory is actually a cryptic new trend, I’ll eat my beanie, but heavens this woman has started more trends that I’ve blindly copied than anyone else so I guess I’m taking note.
In fashionable retrospect, here are her original best. Back when belts were low, Jude Law hadn’t cheated yet and shopping the markets of Notting Hill was the only place to be seen…
Cheers to the Sienna of 2004, perhaps Russell can start repping a paisley blouse in a sign of solidarity.
The low slung cummerbund belt, the micro pleat skirt and denim vest
Girlfriend rocked this belt until it fell apart. She wore it with everything and spawned a trend for hip-hugging belts everywhere. I wore mine with a leopard print mini dress and I thought I was the knees of bees. Expecting this look to return any minute. Your move, Isabel Marant.
The upper arm bangle and cowboy boots
We all copied this one even if rigging our chosen piece of resin bruised our elbows on the way up. Its popularity was kind of inexplicable, but it did help keep up a rolled sleeve. The cowboy boots are majorly back this season and every time I see a pair I’m Sienna-fied.
The drapey knot dress
This was Sienna’s version of the now’s naked dress, usually made from a delicious lightweight silk that fell and knotted in all the right places. ‘Hollywood Tape’ was an essential to avoid public outfit malfunctions…a lesson I learned the hard way.
The “Boho” Look complete with felt floppy hat
This is the exact moment that “Boho” became the number one buzz word in fashion. Everything had to be boho following this floppy hat, floral dress debut. Picnic-meets-English-countryside style was vibed everywhere. From the streets of New York City to my university’s lunch area. The look is coming back, but fashion journalists are busy inventing a replacement name.
The neo-glastonbury look of denim mini dress and studded belt
Even with the Ugg boots, Sienna (in an arguable tie with Kate Moss) re-invented Glastonbury festival style. The population of Coachella have a lot to thank this version of Miller for. The hint of kooky neon, the sexy nonchalance and there’s that belt again.
The London mod look
Technically this was 2005, but how could I not mention when she CUT. HER. HAIR. She went all mod while filming the Edie Sedgwick biopic Factory Girl and everyone went nuts for it. Hairdressers everywhere were forced to warn clients of the potential danger of the pixie cut, me included. Luckily I heeded their advice and was saved from a year of what would have looked like toddler boy’s hair on me.
