Creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon have once again enlisted their friend and collaborator, the celebrated auteur Spike Jonze, to direct a brilliant short film in occasion of the unveiling of their first fragrance for Kenzo, the French label they’ve reinvented since assuming the reins in 2011.

Choreographed by Ryan Heffington, who is perhaps best known for his work with Sia and Maddie Ziegler, and starring American Ballet Theatre trained dancer and The Leftovers actor Margaret Qualley, the film is an unexpectedly electrifying homage to Jonze’s iconic 2001 music video for Fatboy Slim’s Weapon of Choice, which starred Christopher Walken dancing with similar abandon around an empty hotel.

Swapping an empty Marriott for New York’s Lincoln Centre, a brown suit for a vivid Kenzo dress and Norman Cook’s music for Assassin – original music by Jonze’s brother Sam Spiegel & Ape Drums featuring Assassin – the resulting film upends notions of what constitutes a conventional fragrance commercial for something entirely surreal and spectacular, and is well worth watching below.
