We’ve been riding the wavy hair wave a while now with tousled texture dominating runways, red carpets and celebrity Instagram feeds for season now. So when Donatella Versace paired her Spring/Summer 2017 collection with poker-straight hair at Milan Fashion Week last month, it was surprisingly refreshing. And it wasn’t the only showing of glossy looks, with Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Lily Rose Depp both ditching their go-to effortless waves for shiny strands, adding another layer of now-ness to this mid-2000’s look. Even Ariana Grande has been wearing her signature ponytail extra sleek and straight as of late too. Suddenly we have a straight hair renaissance on our hands.

“Poker straight hair will always be a go-to classic, it’s a super easy look for anyone to achieve at home too,” explains hairstylist Natalie-Anne, who says that creating Versace-level gloss requires proper prep. “There’s a difference between straight and flat, and it comes down to preparation as shape and texture play an extremely large role in changing the appeal of this style.”
