Jake Gyllenhaal gives his best performance since that interview with The Guardian in the first trailer for Stronger, a film adapted from the memoir of the same name by Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman.

Just 27-years-old at the time, Bauman was waiting at the finish line in support of his then-girlfriend Erin Hurley – played by Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany – when two bombs were detonated in the 2013 terrorist attack that murdered three people and injured countless more. Bauman lost both legs at the knee, and reportedly went on to help police identify one of the perpetrators. His memoir has been adapted for the screen by Boston local John Pollono, with direction by David Gordon Green.

Stronger is slated for international release in September – just in time for awards season, and if Gyllenhaal can carry the performance with the conviction of a man who wishes to be excluded from all other narratives, then he’s a strong contender for a Globe nod, at the very least.
