The uneven, unpaved footpaths and matted overhead electrical wires can make the surface of Seminyak appear, for the most part, decrepit. While Bali is the number one holiday destination for Australians, the contrast between the streets of Jl. Petitenget (and the likes) and the palatial five star hotels is huge; the street on which you entered the taxi looks completely different to the lavish cobbled hotel driveways in which you and your suitcase exit. Call it a part of Bali’s charm if you will, that bustling rich culture is as much of the reason we keep returning to the Indonesian island as is the pool cocktail service in exchange for many-a-thousand rupiah (or, translated, a couple of Australian dollars).

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve visited Bali once, twice or several times. It is after all a rite of passage for young Australians. You’ve done Seminyak and spent time on Gili. Maybe you’ve tasted the coffee in Ubud and enjoyed breakfast at Betelnut in Canggu. Every year, Bali looks completely different as new establishments open up and a little bit more of that pavement is remodelled according to a foreign architect. For this reason, it’s hard to navigate where your next stay should be. Here, GRAZIA introduces you to one of the most incredible properties tucked away smack bang in the mecca of Seminyak and a place to “step-up” your next Balinese adventure. Enter: One Eleven Resort.

As the thick wooden door is unlocked and slowly opened to villa five, what is revealed is what can only be described as a mini kingdom. Manicured lawns line your own lit-up private pool and a Japanese sleek, minimalist outdoor living space and kitchen mean wine and balmy night swims are aplenty. It’s the midnight chef-prepared sushi and dessert waiting in the fridge that tips this off as a place of superb personalisation. “It is our attention to detail that we take pride in,” says One Eleven general manager Ms Helen Fox.“Whether it is our nightly desserts to our breakfast prepared and served in the privacy in the villas, our his and hers amenities or the maxi bar, we create the ultimate feeling of relaxation for all our guests to be pampered and indulged. It is with this intention that One Eleven sets itself apart and thus is proud to be the winner for the worldwide best for the romance category of the 2016 CondeNast Johansens Awards.”

It’s a noteworthy award and perhaps reason as to why so many Hollywood and Australian personalities, a la Tash Oakley, have stayed here (the hotel politely declines to divulge the names of celebrity guest so as to protect their privacy). Private, yet unpretentious and usually attracting couples, (each villa sleeps two), One Eleven is the bespoke birthday surprise, engagement celebration, honeymoon or the perfect abode of solitude.

STAY

While nestled in the middle of Seminyak, the villas are so quiet, it’s a verdant interlude to the million motorcycles, scooters and beeping cars in the surrounding streets. Boasting 350 square metres, each villa has it’s own 14 metre swimming pool and massage gazebo. With only nine villas and a penthouse in the property, space is the main luxury. Each morning, butlers will prepare your breakfast in your villa for you.

PASS TIME

SWIM: Nothing is this Bali bubble beats a morning swim in your pool. Lay on your day bed and watch the sun rise. And if you close your eyes and listen really carefully, you can hear the early-morning crickets, birds and local prayer drums. As breakfast is being served, plug your iPhone into the provided speakers for that real holiday vibe. (London Grammar works best here, heating up to some Kanye in the afternoon).

MASSAGE: Stepping up your holiday in Bali naturally means stepping up your daily massage. While BodyWorks may have been your previous go-to, for a similar price, you can experience some head-to-toe kneading in the privacy of your own villa. (One eleven guests receive the discounted rate.)

SHUTTLE: With established personal relationships with proprietors, One Eleven concierge staff can reserve you a spot at local restaurants and drive you to and from.

ENTERTAIN: The sprawling living space should be shared. Order a platter from room service and invite some friends over for an afternoon drink and swim.

WINE & DINE

While the room service cocktails on a lounge-bed by your private pool are the best spot for sunset drinks, if you feel like getting dressed up and venturing outside your villa for dinner and drinks, a few recommendations in the area.

Shiro Sushi Sake
A short walk or buggy ride up to hotel reception will take you to this high-end Japanese restaurant and bar. “At Shiro, our guests prefer to leave it to the chef with a course of Omakase,” says Fox. “You dine in intimacy whilst enjoying the Edomae Style of preparation in fine Japanese cuisine with the use of the freshest catch and local produce.” Book via One Eleven reception or Shiro Sushi Sake (reservation only).
TRY: You heard it here – leave it to the chef with the Omakase set.b10

Kilo
Located along the Jalan Drupadi stretch, the vibrant and brand-new restaurant is fast becoming a place of recommendation among well-heeled tourists. Appealing to a traditional palette, the menu is a fancy take on local produce. Book early via OpenTable.
TRY: BBQ pork ribs (the meat will literally fall off the bone and is a boyfriend’s haven). The Homemade Ricotta Gnocci is a house must-order.

Barbacoa
Situated along Jalan Petitenget in Kerobokan, this restaurant is dedicated to BBQ, wood fire, charcoal and loads of smoke. Influenced heavy by Latin American style flavours, if you love meat, you must try here. Book via Chope.
TRY: Charcoal octopus, grilled chorizo and 8 hour wood-fired asado (meat) of the Day. For dessert, order the white chocolate and honeycomb ice-cream sandwich.
