Melbourne’s annual music, art and good food summit Sugar Mountain has unveiled the lineup for its January 21 event at the Victorian College of Arts, and true to form it’s an eclectic mix of established, ascendent and emerging acts guaranteed to become festival favourites if they aren’t already.

Blood Orange, the musical project of genius creative polymath Dev Hynes, leads the lineup alongside other Melbourne exclusives including German techno auteur Pantha Du Prince, Jessy Lanza, Little Simz and a new collaboration between Suzanne Ciani and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. The festival shares a slight artist crossover with Hobart’s MONA Fomo, at which both Pantha Du Prince and Aurelia Smith will appear alongside fellow Sugar Mountain acts Moses Sumney and Kelsey Lu, two hauntingly beautiful talents who will also make their Australian debuts at the festivals.

A strong local contingent will also be lead by Big Scary, whose brilliant new album Animal is sure to strike a chord amongst revellers, as will performances from Jack River, Slum Sociable, KUČKA and Dro Carey, as well as MY DISCO, Black Cab, Methyl Ethel and Tornado Wallace, amongst others.

The arts programme too capitalises on cross pollination of local and international talent, lead by American muralist MOMO, Supergroup London’s Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan, who will create a transformative festival gateway, and a world premiere original commission by Canadian visual artist Robyn Moody working in collaboration with Chairlift frontwoman Caroline Polachek. Sydney-based artist Elliot Routledge, Tokyo-based Australian illustrator Karan Singh and Melbourne’s own March Studio and Caleb Shea will also represent our world class local scene through sculptural murals, augmented reality, stage design and towering sculptures in the festival’s Boiler Room stage respectively.

Sugar Mountain takes place Saturday January 21 at the Victorian College of Arts, Melbourne. Limited first release tickets are on sale now from Sugar Mountain. Find out more information, including the full lineup, here
