When the weather takes a turn for the extreme, as it is wont to do in every capital city barring Hobart this weekend, there are worse things you could do than make like Dorothy and opt for a haven of climate controlled respite somewhere over the rainbow.
And this weekend, you’d be hard pressed to find somewhere that better embodies this notion than interactive contemporary arts hub Artspace, who from today presents a vibrant new exhibition featuring the work of 13 Australian artists working across disparate mediums but who share in an interest in exploring colourist abstraction and its manifold meanings.
Opening today and running until April 17, Superposition of three types will present newly commissioned and recent work by artists working in situ, many of them in a live performance style, including multi-disciplinarian Rebecca Baumann, who will paint the walls of the gallery different colours; sculptural painter Gemma Smith, who will be completing double-sided glass paintings suspended between the columns of the building; and Huseyin Sami, whose live performances are conducted using bespoke, hyper-extended paintbrushes. The exhibition will also interrogate the notion that abstraction is limited to pure two-dimensional aesthetics by stationing three artists through the gallery space who will perform durational pieces across movement, sound and spoken word.
Superposition of three types will be open daily at Artspace in The Gunnery at Woolloomooloo from February 10 until April 17, 2017. Entry to Artspace and the exhibition is free. You can find out more information here.
