Justin Hurwitz’s Oscar-winning score for La La Land, one of the year’s most acclaimed (and divisive) movies, will be performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in a series of concerts accompanied by a full-screening of Damien Chazelle’s lauded musical.

The winner of six Academy Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song for ‘City of Stars’ (relive that moment from the film above), La La Land’s score will be performed live-to-film for the first time in Australia by a 100-piece orchestra in the Concert Hall at the Sydney Opera House over two nights in December. The recorded vocal performances of the film’s cast, including Best Actress Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling (also an Academy Award nominee for Best Actor) and John Legend, will be featured at the event.

The live performance concept will have its premiere on May 26 at the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, as apt a location as any considering the film is a musical paean to the city. Writer and director Damien Chazelle, who also won an Academy Award for his efforts, said in a statement that, “For me, one of the most thrilling and fulfilling parts of making La La Land was scoring the film to a live orchestra: a hundred phenomenal local musicians playing in real-time to the Technicolor images, bringing Justin’s compositions to vivid life.”

La La Land In Concert will be performed in the Concert Hall at the Sydney Opera House from Thursday December 7 and Friday December 8. Tickets go on sale Saturday April 1. You can find out more information here.
