I’d sooner punch myself in the face than ascribe labels like #goals to anything, but Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift’s first joint statement on the matter of their breakup is the platonic #goal for the dissolution of all relationships from now until our inevitable pansexual and polyamorous future renders breakups obsolete. Kidding!

Harris – real name Adam Wiles – issued the couple’s first public words on the very important matter of their parting on Twitter this morning, writing:

Swift promptly retweeted the highly amicable sentiments, ostensibly putting to rest all notions that their separation was anything less than the civil parting of ways that you can imagine Taylor Swift would allow it to be.

Theirs was a relationship forged on aspirational ideals – every tanned, toned and flaxen haired inch of it – and it would now appear that their severance has provided another unobtainable paradigm to which we can all aspire and fall short of. Who could have foreseen when the pair started dating 15 months ago that they would propose a lesson in modern etiquette that eschewed publicly dragging your ex in favour of “a huge amount of love and respect”? In an age where it’s all too easy to dredge up the very worst qualities and correspondences of our extinguished flames in a very public manner, isn’t it refreshing to see a couple (apparently) make peace with their circumstances, or more appropriately for these two, make pay while the sun shines.

May we all one day handle our highly-publicised break-ups with the good grace and fortitude of these two unimaginably wealthy troubadours.
