Taylor Swift has arrived at the 2018 American Music Awards in Los Angeles. She will be opening the show tonight, her first awards performance in three years. The talk though on the red carpet was less about her silver metallic dress, boots and up-do (a rare sighting) and more to do with the reported significant increase in voter registration since her politically-charged Instagram post yesterday.

The 27-year-old who has remained silent in the past publicly endorsed Democrats in Tennessee in the mid term races. She says, while she has been a “reluctant” political voice in the past, “due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.”

“I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country,” Swift said. “I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. “

The singer urged her 112 million followers to register to vote. “So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info.”

Traffic reportedly increased after Swift’s post, with 155,940 unique visitors coming to Vote.org in the 24 hours following, compared to the average number of daily users of 14,078.

President Trump of course weighed in on Swift’s left-leaning sentiments tweeting he likes her music about 25% less now.
