The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon was brought to tears by Taylor Swift’s performance of New Year’s Day on the latest episode of the show.

Fallon had just returned from a week off following the death of his mother Gloria.

As one of the show’s producer’s explained on Twitter, Swift had not been scheduled to perform, but the crew wanted to do something to welcome Jimmy back, and when they asked Taylor, in town for Saturday Night Live, she agreed “without hesitation”.

Fast forward to the performance and Taylor sung the dark, moody ballad, which includes the line “squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi”.

Eerily, in his opening monologue Fallon revealed a special thing he had with his mum where they would squeeze each other’s hand three times and say ‘I love you’.

Even if you’re not grieving like Fallon is right now, Taylor’s performance might leave you feeling teary, too.

Musician Jack Antonoff – Lena Dunham’s boyfriend – co-wrote New Year’s Day with Taylor, and he shared some insight into how the track came about on Twitter.

“Taylor doing New Year’s Day on Fallon was beautiful,” Antonoff wrote.

“That song means a lot to me. Happened so quickly at my apartment. We texted the next morning to make sure it wasn’t a dream.”
