Miranda Priestley’s wise words will forever resonate with us: “Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking.” But what about florals for summer?

A little more groundbreaking, floral fragrance in summer is a lovely reprise from the clichéd concoctions of coconut and citrus. From strange seedlings to rekindled rose; here, our pick of the bunch.

the new white floral
When it comes to fragrance; a white floral is forever classic. French house Creed has reinvented the white floral – and their best-selling fragrance, Love In White – taking it from the wedding day to the French Rivera. Bottling up hot nights on the Côte d’Azur, it transports you to the Mediterranean with Calabrian bergamot, sweet magnolia and jasmine. While its heart is a little more robust – think rolling waves and heady, hot nights – with iris and Virginian cedarwood. Seeking that eternal summer? Look no further.

the perfect posy
The ultimate floral – but Gucci-fied – Alessando Michele’s latest chapter in the Bloom narrative comes up roses. And osmanthus flower. And jasmine. A true floral, it combines the peachy, soft notes of osmanthus flower, jasmine and rangoon creeper with its heart, the tuberose. But, it’s not all sunshine and rose petals. A deeper, woodier accord of patchouli, musk and ginger keeps it a little naughty – like Michele’s Gucci girls – mysterious, enigmatic and sensual.

THE modern ROSE
From Covent Garden to Mecca Cosmetica; Floral Street is a new boutique fragrance house that reinvents traditional floral fragrance. Their Neon Rose EDP is the perfect example; like rose on acid, it’s for the expressive fragrance wearer, quirky and little left of centre. Featuring freshly-chopped jasmine, Sichuan pepper and white cedarwood, its heart – the rose – was picked and cooked up in the Floral Street lab for extra punch. For those who love rose, but also like to live on the edge a little.

The mysterious bunch
One of the most sublime fragrance debuts this year, Frederic Malle’s Carnal Flower comes housed in a limited edition, bespoke flacon by legendary glassmaker Carlos Scarpa. The iconic tuberose scent is for those artful souls who palate summer a little differently. Slightly animistic in character, in remains fresh with vivacious camphor and bold, bright spices, and yet exudes a milky sweetness. Then a summery accord of orange blossom absolute, coconut and musk adds a little sunshine. An esoteric scent ripe for the picking.

The fresh bouquet
ByTerry takes a traditional bouquet and freshens it up a little, adding sun-ripened Mediterranean fig and zingy mandarin for her Flagrant Delice Eau De Parfum. A feminine floral scent with gourmand notes, it’s deeply romantic but stays grounded with tonka beans and milky accents. Perfect for a summer date night.
