It’s an idea that has been percolating for a little while: The low-rise pants trend is on the way. While the general consensus fear its revival more than death itself, Kim Kardashian West just made a subtle case for a low-cut return.

The reality star and business mogul was spotted in Miami in a pair of – surely vintage – snake-patterned, skin-tight, skin-baring, low-riding, flared pants. It was a lot. Like the early 2000s trend, Kardashian knotted her tee; a clever styling trick if you’re going for a form-fitting, naval exposing look. A retro pair of round shades and a stiletto thong were added – but can we go back to the pants for one second?

The panic around the return of the low-rise has existed for at least a year. While we could argue Kardashian’s Miami pants sit at a low-to-mid-rise level, the skin-baring, stitched-up sides are reminiscent of Britney Spears and her dangly belly-ring circa 2002 – and most definitely one trend degree away from Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty” days. In fact, in and amongst the snakeskin, the cut-outs and the hip-grazing flared-ness, I’m surprised Kardashian didn’t throw another trend in the mix like an in-built, visible thong.

Don’t get us wrong, snakeskin is a trend we are firmly behind. Last night, the 39-year-old was seen in a full snakeskin look at the Dior Men’s Fall 2020 show; Dior snake coat and bag, Gucci snake pants, Yeezy snake boots.

But the next morning was the dreaded moment. As Kardashian is a Pinterest mood board staple – and one month out from the turn of a new decade – does this sighting mark our return to our former low-riding selves? Please don’t jump out the window yet. But hold onto your high-waisted jeans for dear life.
