The jacket battle: Denim vs Leather. Which team are you on?

They’re the two most sort-after casual jackets of the season. The denim crop and the leather moto. Both of these classic outerwears are timeless and worthy of their investment. Both instantly style-up and finish-off a casual look, while also successfully dressing-down an evening look. Both fit the brief of being more chic than a hoodie but more casual than a coat. So really, your decision comes down to style… and if the budget allows, definitely get both.

Denim

The jean jacket renaissance has been building over the last few years. At first, none of us were totally ready to sport denim up top again for fear of looking like 80s reincarnate. Then suddenly, 80s reincarnate slipped into high fashion and the classic denim crop became hot property all over again.

This season? The look is oversized, as though you borrowed it from your boyfriend. Wear over everything from feminine frocks to your sweats after the gym. Roll back the sleeves and pop the collar, giving the fabric as much movement as possible. Go for a washed, light or mid-blue colouring, just like Andi Csinger, Taylor Hill and Caroline De Maigret (above) have done. Our pick? If you can afford it, the Balenciaga. Leather

The leather jacket is probably the ultimate investment piece. When you purchase a classic cut in a good quality leather there will never be a time you commit it to the ‘throw out’ pile. You’ll keep it forever, wear it every season and no doubt have it borrowed by your bestie/sister/son/daughter. So while this option is pricier than it’s denim competitor, it’s one that will stand the test of time. The best way to ensure you’ll always love it? Opt for a cropped ‘moto’ style.
