Be on guard to block those online film plot spoilers. The Light Between Oceans, one of the most anticipated films of the year, is releasing in the U.S. next week. Unfortunately for Australians, we need to wait until January 2017 to watch the film where Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender fell in love IRL. In fact, the director Dereck Cianfrance admitted to making the two actors live together for six week on set in Tasmania – and since the film was shot in September 2014 and Vikander and Fassbender went public with their relationship in December of that same year, perhaps Cianfrance had an ulterior motive all along. After all, his protagonists are ridiculously besotted with one another.

From the best-selling novel by M.L. Stedman comes the story of Tom (Fassbender) and his young wife Isabel (Vikander) who, after she is unable to conceive, move to a small remote island off Western Australia. One day, they rescue a baby from a errant rowboat floating to shore and, to cut a long story short, raise the young girl as their own. Years pass but when Tom meets a woman in a town nearby (Rachel Weisz), she tells him the story of how she lost her husband and daughter at sea and it becomes apparent the baby in the rowboat was indeed her child. Heavy and heartbreaking.
