It’s the week when Hollywood takes a sojourn to the Côte d’Azur. When the celebrities we most recently celebrated in their bonkers best for the Met Gala pack their designer suitcases with the haute, the glamorous and most regal gowns their stylists can find for them.
Of all the red-carpet-athons that the fashion year offers up, Cannes is the most fairytale. There is something classically elegant about this film festival. It may have become a little LA-afied over the last decade, but it’s location and atmosphere still begs an image that is quintessentially prince and princess.
Last night Quentin Tarantino premiered his much anticipated Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (25 years after he premiered Pulp Fiction here), the Elton John biopic Rocketman was released and there has been a whole host of prominent indie filmmakers showcasing their creative genius…but right now we’re here to ogle the exquisite couture.
Striding the Promenade de la Croisette in their most ostentatiously fabulous includes the stars of the films , A-list honourees, a large portion of America’s celebrity who’s-who, and, the unofficial fashion kween of Cannes, Bella Hadid.
In an unusual twist, Elle Fanning, took to Instagram on Monday night to explain that her dress was “too tight” causing her to faint during the Chopard Trophy dinner. Wearing vintage Prada, Fanning collapsed from her chair during one of the welcome speeches. She was quickly assisted by her sister Dakota and, apparently, Colin Firth who was nearby and rushed to her aid.
Oh, Mr. Darcy…
So let us ruffle our feathers over the most show-stopping looks to swan the South of France this year, so far, but as divine and Pinterest-worthy as these gowns may be, we can only hope no other starlets fall victim to fashion’s dark side.
