We thought she had us fooled. Like the models before her (read: Gigi, Kendall, Bella and the like) who, with social media sorcery and the wizardry of hairstylists, duped us into believing they had blunt bobs, frayed fringes and crazy colour changes, we thought Karlie’s transformation was also an illusion.
But no, Karlie Kloss’ hair is the real deal: peroxide blonde.
And of course, all was revealed via Instagram, substantiated on close friend Derek Blasberg’s Instagram (concrete evidence, always):
“You guys, it’s not a wig,” Blasberg blurted, with a coy Kloss flipping her icy new platinum locks back and forth (you know, as models do). “It’s real! It might also all fall off any minute now!” Kloss added.
Debuting the platinum blonde at Dior’s Haute Couture Fall 2017 show in Paris, Kloss remained tonal from root to hemline; swanning out in a mustard yellow pleated bustier dress (that silhouette now synonymous with Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior), complete with chunky black buckled boots and Western hat, drawn delicately around her décolleté and slung low across her back. It was a yellow affair, and for a naturally flaxen-blonde, such a change typically wouldn’t ignite much interest. Blonde to platinum? Big deal. But on Kloss – who is a natural brunette but recent honey blonde convert – it proved quite chameleonic, shifting her look from a wholesome cookie-baking angel to a slightly grungy and punked-up style-setter.
A whitewash ‘do is always tricky, particularly on the fair-skinned, but Kloss is arresting and it speaks “fashion” (particularly when offset with that red lip). The look will no doubt propel platinum back into the spotlight (if it ever dimmed).
As for the potential “fall out” catastrophe – one word, Karlie. Olaplex.
